APC councillor may serve 15 months jail term

By Victoria Saffa

Magistrate Ernest Gooding yesterday sentenced Councillor Abdul H. Kamara of the All Peoples Congress (APC) in ward 210, constituency 61, Yoni chiefdom, Tonkolili district, to fifteen months imprisonment or an alternative fine of five million Leones fine (Le.5, 000,000). The ruling party councillor was convicted for wife beating his wife and misappropriation of public funds for the construction of an ultra modern market.

The accused was arraigned on two counts of domestic violence and misappropriation of public funds at the Magburaka magistrate court, after the prosecution said he on 10 and 11 February 2014 abused his wife, Ms. Adama Fullah, chairlady of constituency 061, and for economic abuse against the people of Yoni Chiefdom.

The accused pleaded guilty to the charges after the court clerk read the charges to him.

The convicted councillor is reported to have received money from the Tonkolili District Council to construct a market for the community, but instead misappropriated the money, as well as other donations from private individuals. The disgraced councillor is also reported to have beaten his estranged wife, Adama Fullah, who advised him against destroying his political career.

It is expected though that he will pay the fine and avoid going to jail.
