Mariama Sajor Barrie and Ibrahim Bah were yesterday released on a whopping Le100 million bail and two sureties each by Justice John Bosco Alieu, after spending nine months in remand custody for the alleged murder of 5-year-old Khadija Madinatu Saccoh

The judge used his unfettered discretion pursuant to Section 79 (1) of the Criminal Procedure Act 1965, to put both accused persons on bail.

The judge ordered that one of the two sureties of each of the accused persons should produce a title deed and that all of them should be residents in Freetown.

Earlier, defense witness Mohamed Abu Kamara, told the court that he witnessed the postmortem examination on the remains of the deceased, but that no fingernail marks were observed on the neck as claimed by the doctor.

“At the hospital, the doctor examined the outside part of the deceased, and the body was fresh. I did not see or observe any fingernails mark on the neck of the deceased,” he said.

The witness who introduced himself as the adopted son to the first accused admitted knowing the deceased and that he used to visit them regularly.

He said the deceased was like a biological daughter to the first accused and that he had never witnessed a situation where the first accused maltreated the deceased, adding that the first accused had always kept the deceased clean and decent.

He said on the date of incident- 17th June, 2020, he received telephone call from the first accused informing him that they have lost the deceased and that the next day he travelled to Freetown, to witness the burial.

He said whilst in Freetown he later understood that post mortem examination was going to be conducted on the deceased, and on the following day-Saturday 20th June, 2020, he joined family members at Connaught hospital to witness the postmortem examination.

He said the doctor inserted his finger into the virginal and anus of the deceased and revealed to them that the deceased was sexually tampered with prior to her death.

He said the doctor told them that the deceased was raped multiple times and attempting to keep the deceased silence, she was strangled to death by a ‘professional killer’.

He said at the end of the process, the first accused was arrested and taken to the Lumley police station where one of the police officers asked them to hire a lawyer because even the Minister of Internal Affairs and other big personalities are interested in the matter.

Mariama Sajor Barrie and Ibrahim Bah are currently standing trial on two count charges of conspiracy to murder and murder contrary to law.

State Prosecutor Joseph A.K Sesay alleges that both accused on Wednesday 17th June, 2020, at Spur Road in Freetown conspired with unknown persons and murdered Kadija Madinatu Saccoh.

Trial was adjourned to Wednesday 17th March for the second accused to open his case.
