SLFA still hopeful of Ghana venue

By Sahr Morris Jnr

The Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA) is still hopeful of being allowed by the Ghanaian authorities to use Accra as their home ground to host DR Congo in their Group D encounter of the CAF 2015 African Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Earlier last week it was reported that the Ghanaian Football Association (GFA), through its government, had rejected a request made by the SLFA and the Sierra Leone government to play the Leone Stars qualifying matches in Accra due health consideration following the Ebola outbreak in the country.

However, General Secretary of the SLFA, Chris Kamara, said they are still optimistic and will continue to push for the Ghana option, adding that the FA is yet to receive any further correspondence from the GFA that they are not ready to host Sierra Leone.

He said: “Withdrawing is not an option for us. Already, His Excellency the President, Ernest Bai Koroma, in a meeting with us and authorizes from the ministry [of Sports] has said we should find any option for the matches to play. So we are working on this together with all authorities concerned.”

According to the SLFA scribe, they had earlier contacted three countries – Ghana, Gambia and Morocco – but there are major doubts about the Gambia option.

“If Ghana proves otherwise, we will look at other options that we are presently in constant talks with, including CAF. We need government to work speedily to get this done by communicating with the other nations,” Kamara said.

Sierra Leone will face Ivory Coast on September 6 before hosting DR Congo on September 10.
