October 5, 2015 By Memunatu Bangura

Minister of Information and Communications, Alhaji Alpha Kanu, has disclosed that President of the People’s Republic of China, Xi Jinping, has promised to award thirty-five thousand (35,000) scholarships to African young professionals to study in China, noting that Sierra Leone would be allocated with 7,000.

Mr. Kanu made this disclosure last Thursday at the weekly government press briefing at the Ministry of Information and Communications’ conference room. He said President Xi has also promised to build a Centre for Disease Control (CDC) in Sierra Leone, which would serve as a referral centre for West Africa.

He said China would support the Youth Village project and has also vowed to help UN Women with a grant of one hundred million United States dollars to empower women and girls.

The Information Minister disclosed that President Xi has also assured President Koroma of his willingness to continue strengthening existing relationship between the Peoples Republic of China and the Government of Sierra Leone, and that the Chinese President has assured his counterpart that he would lend support to the Mamamah project to construct an ultra-modern airport.

Kanu further explained that their trip to attend the United Nations General Assembly was successful because President Koroma returned home with the sum of four hundred million dollars to strengthen the country’s recovery from Ebola.
