5 docked for Le.119m theft at AML

Five accused persons were yesterday remanded at the maximum security prison on Pademba Road by Magistrate Komba Kamanda of the Freetown Magistrates Court No.2 for allegedly stealing 500 voltage welding generator valued at Le.119m, property of iron ore mining company, Africa Minerals Limited.

The accused persons – Mohamed Fofanah, George Sesay, Samba Thaimu Sheriff, Idrissa Kamara and Ibrahim Umaru S. Kamara – were charged on two counts of conspiracy to commit felony and larceny, contrary to section 2 of the Larceny Act of 1916.

The prosecution alleges that the accused persons on 25 February 2014 at Pepel village, Lokomasamah chiefdom, Port Loko district in northern Sierra Leone, had with intent to steal, conspired to commit felony and stole one Lincoln 500 voltage welding generator valued at Le.119m.

Prosecution witness, Police Liaison Officer at the mining company, David Jeremiah told the court about how on 26 February 2014, while at the security post and listening to radio communication, one Momoh Sesay called and informed the training supervisor that the generator at the platform had been stolen.

“I visited the platform and observed that the Lincoln machine was missing and I together with other security personnel searched for the machine and saw some foot steps towards the swampy area,” he said.

He explained that on 27 February, he got information that the missing machine had been discovered in Freetown.

The matter continues.
