2016 FIFA World Cup: Liberia qualifies as Salone pulls out

April 28, 2015 By Sahr Morris Jrn

The Liberia national U-20 female team has qualified to the second phase of the qualifying rounds of 2016 FIFA U-20 Women’s Championship after their neighbours, Sierra Leone’s withdrawal.

According to the Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA) Director of Competitions, Sorie Ibrahim Sesay, lack of funds was the reason for the team’s withdrawal.

“It is true that we have pulled out of the U-20 qualifiers due to lack of funds. However, we are hopeful that the U-17 team will compete in the preliminary round of their World Cup campaign,” Sesay said.

Liberia, who now gains an automatic qualification to the first round, will face the Falconets of Nigeria in July in a two-legged contest.

This is the second time the female U-20 team has pulled out of the qualifiers – the first was in 2012 after they were scheduled to face Nigerian in the first round in February, and the same reason was given for their withdrawal.
