17 Easter rioters sentenced

Principle Magistrate of court No. 1, Dr. Abou Bakar Binneh-Kamara has sentenced seventeen (17) accused persons that were arrested on Easter Monday, 17th April 2017 during a Masquerade parade.

The seventeen accused persons were sentenced to four (4) months in prison or alternatively pay a fine of five hundred thousand Leones (Le500, 000) each on count one, four months in prison or pay a fine of four hundred thousand Leones (Le 400, 000) each on count two and three months in prison or pay a fine of two hundred thousand Leones (Le 200, 000) each.

The accused persons were arraigned on three counts bordering on unlawful possession of cannabis sativa, contrary to Section 48 of the Pharmacy and Drugs Act of 2001, riotous conduct and disorderly behaviour contrary to Section 12(c) of the Public Order Ac of 1965.

The first accused- Amara Tejan Kabia, was only charged with unlawful possession of cannabis sativa, whilst the others were charged with the remaining two counts.

Police had alleged that the accused during the said date destroyed properties and vandalized the windows of ordinary and peaceful sierra Leoneans at Savage Square, along Kissy Road.

However, the accused persons had earlier pleaded guilty and pleaded with the Bench temper justice with mercy.

The accused persons include, Amara Tejan Kabia, Victor Ulric Reginald Cole, Mohamed Momoud Keita, Abass Bangura, Mohamed Kamara, Sulaiman Barrie, Musa Jimmy, Ibrahim Bangura, Ibrahim Vandi, Alhaji Lansana, Umar Jalloh, Musa Kamara, Saidu Kargbo, Moses Johnson, Ibrahim Sesay, Abdul Rahman Sesay and Emmanuel Findy.
