12 remanded for illegal public gathering

Magistrate Komba Kamanda of the Freetown Magistrates’ Court No.1 yesterday remanded twelve (12) accused persons at both the male and female correctional centers at Pademba Road and Jomo Kenyatta Road, respectively, after they were arraigned for illegal gathering and being in a place used to smoke cannabis, locally called ‘diamba’.

The twelve accused persons are: Isatu Koroma, Isata Kamara, Abubakarr Conteh, Alpha Kamara, Isha Coker, Salamatu Bangura, Ibrahim Koroma, Samuel Macauley, Swarray Yorpoi, Zainab Barrie, Foday Kamara and Saidu Sesay.

They were charged with two counts of unlawful public gathering contrary to Regulation 15(1) of the Public Emergency Regulations of 2014, and being found in a place used for smoking cannabis, contrary to section 41(1) of the Pharmacy and Drugs Act 2001.

According to police prosecutor 8715 I. S. Bangura, the accused were found at a place used to smoke cannabis on 9 January 2015 at Susan’s Bay, a slum area in the east of Freetown.

All accused persons admitted their guilty and pleaded for clemency.

Magistrate Kamanda remanded all 12 of them pending sentencing on 16 January.
