10 jailed for carrying offensive weapon

Presiding Magistrate at the Pademba Road Court No.1,Hannah Bonnie, yesterday sentenced ten convicts to serve ninety days at the Freetown Male Correctional Centre or pay a fine of two million Leones each for frequenting  at a place used to smoke cannabis sativa and carrying offensive weapon.

The convicts includ Umaru Kargbo, Mohamed Bangura, Lamin Fofanah, Eike Mansaray, Santegie Kamara, Abubakarr Koroma, Abdul Aziz Kargbo, Abdul Bangura, Foday Turay, and Mohamed Kamara.

They were charged to court on two counts of frequenting at a place used for smoking cannabis sativa and carrying offensive weapon without lawful authority contrary to Section 10 (1) of the Public Order Act of 1965.

According to the file sheet, the men on Tuesday 2nd July, 2019 at Ogoo Farm, Goderich in Freetown, were found frequenting in a place used to smoke cannabis sativa.

However, the accused persons pleaded guilty to the charges.

In his plea in mitigation, lawyer I. Sawaneh, pleaded to the Magistrate to temper justice with mercy, noting that they have not wasted the court’s time in pleading guilty to the charges.

He informed the court that some of the accused are pupils and that they have promised not to repeat the crime again, adding that they have promised to go back to the community as changed agents.
