One of the leading banking institutions in Sierra Leone, United Bank for Africa (UBA) yesterday introduced a new Prepaid VISA Card which customers could use to transact in Leones anywhere in the world through the ATM Point of Sale (POS) and through web transaction.
Speaking at the UBA headquarters in Freetown during the launching ceremony, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Ndubuisi Ejiofor, said the bank operates in 19 countries in Africa, including Sierra Leone, and that the just launched Prepaid Visa Card had been tested and launched in the other 18 African countries, and it works perfectly.
“We would continue to pioneer the electronic banking system in Sierra Leone,” said CEO Ejiofor. “This product had been launched in 18 countries in Africa and now in Sierra Leone, and I want to assure you that the system had been tested and it works perfectly. There is no doubt about the system.”
He said the card would be of great help to the people of Sierra Leone, especially now that the Central Bank has put a stop to local financial transactions using the United States dollar. It would be an easy way for someone to travel to anywhere without wondering how to get dollars or other currency to use while on your trip, he said.
He said the UBA Prepaid VISA Card is a payment card which is setup without the need for customers to own or operate a bank account with UBA, and that it is a Leone denominated card that is prefunded and reloadable, and is internationally accepted in all Visa acceptance point in the world as the product is pin-protected with chip technology for enhanced security, as no unauthorised persons can use it, even if stolen or missing.
He said the card presents immense advantage to businessmen, university students, travelers, et al, because it makes transaction easier and could be reloaded anywhere in the world by just using the account numbers on the card.
