Sierra Leone’s Sports Ministry has on Thursday joined other international bodies across the world to celebrate the United Nations’ International Day of Sport for Development and Peace.
In 2013, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 6 April as the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace in a bid to celebrate the contribution of sports and physical activity to education, human development, healthy lifestyles and a peaceful world.
Since then, the date has been inserted in the official UN calendar of international days and is celebrated annually.
As part of its celebration, the Sports Ministry and the Nations Sports Council played beach volleyball between senior staff and junior staff,in which the Minister, Ahmed Khanou also took part.
Also, the ministry’s staff engaged in football matches and athletics activities.
In his statement to celebrate the day, the Sports Minister congratulated the UN family for taking the bold step in furthering and accelerating the global development agenda through sport.
He said: “President Koroma recognised this years ago whilst carving out his development initiative for this nation dubbed the agenda for prosperity (A4P). TheA4p is Sierra Leone’s third generation poverty reduction strategy paper pillar 3.
Minister Khanou said urge all to use the power of sport as a ‘common denominator that breaks down all the walls, all the barriers’ adding that sport should be the language of unity, social cohesion and national integration.
