Minister of Sports, Ahmed Khanou, has confirmed that the much talked about national sports development conference will now be staged from 18-19 May, 2017, at the newly refurbished Siaka Steven Stadium Atlantic Hall in Freetown.
According to the Sports Minister, the stage was all set for the conference as it has already got the approval of the Office of the President.
“It is now confirmed that our National Sports development conference will go ahead as planned this month. We are expecting to host over 250 delegates and could possibly stage the conference in an open air atmosphere if the weather permits us,” Minister Khanou said.
The Conference was earlier scheduled to have taken place on November 3-5, 2016 in Makeni but was cancelled due to several reasons which the minister said was beyond their control.
“Already the team of expert have reviewed the sports policy and the sports Act and has also drafted the sports code of conduct for all and sundry in sports,” he said, adding that the sports policy will now tell the country’s plan and aspiration as a nation.
“Sierra Leone has never had an entire remodeling of sports to an international standard which will allow our sportsmen and sportswomen to stop participating but competing in international games.”
“It is the intention and vision of the Minister of Sports to have a National Sports Trust Fund so that sports associations will stop begging for funds to attend international games. The proposed National Sports Trust Fund will be a huge plus for our sports,” Ahmed Khanou said.
