Three Sierra Leonean tennis youngsters, Bassie Sorie Kargbo, John Abu Marrah and Mattu Kamara, on Friday departed the country to compete in the ITF/CAT West/Central Africa Junior Championships in Abuja, Nigeria.

The tournament commenced on Monday January 13 and will end on 19 January.

After several training programmes and local competitions, coach Amidu Dumbuya – who accompanied their players – said he hopes the Junior Tennis Initiative (JTI) programme will help his players face the challenges in the tournament.

“With the JTI tournament, which its fruitfulness depends on how we encourage the young players to compete in international competitions and how best they can perform internationally, I hope these players will prove something in Abuja,” he said.

The team, together with the Sierra Leone Tennis Association president, Kelvin Kellie, before their departure on Friday, bade farewell to the National Olympic Committee of Sierra Leone (NOC-SL) where they were given motivational words from the committee’s executive members.
