The Sierra Leone Athletics Association (SLAA) is in preparation to host the second edition of the National Athletics Championship scheduled for May 1 this year at the National Stadium in Freetown.
According to the President of SLAA, Abdul Karim Sesay, all members of the Association are currently preparing for the competition, adding that the athletes are aware that the traditional Boxing Day sport is not enough for them to showcase their talents.
He said: “Even the technical team is finding it very difficult to select athletes for international competitions. The national championship will help to prepare the athletes for the Commonwealth Games in July, and it will also help to scout younger talents that will succeed older outgoing athletes in international competitions.”
The SLAA boss, who doubles as the Vice President of the National Olympic Committee of Sierra Leone (NOC-SL), also expressed his delight with the massive improvement made by the provincial athletes, hoping that they will continue their outstanding work.
Sesay revealed that they have agreed to invite Ghana, Guinea, Mali, Senegal, Liberia, Ivory Coast and Nigeria to participate in the forthcoming competition.
