DECEMBER 18, 2014
In July, I announced that I would be launching my last worldly album with a concert at the National Stadium in December. Unfortunately, the ban on public gatherings designed to stop the spread of the deadly Ebola virus forced me to adjust my plans. I was determined not to let Ebola stop the music, just as I did not let civil war stop me from bringing music and hope to the beleaguered populations of Sierra Leone through peace concerts.
A few months ago, I started planning Stay-At-Home concerts entitled “Ebola Can’t Stop the Music” to bring music and hope into your homes on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. The idea came from Todd Unterseher, the U.S. Embassy’s Commercial Officer, who was a former tour manager.
I began working with Africell on the logistical arrangements, including promotion, booking the stadium for filming, and scheduling time on SLBC. Unfortunately, during these preparations it appears that the idea had been hijacked even after I discussed it in the media. As a result, I am cancelling my concert in the interest of maintaining unity and harmony at this critical juncture in the fight against Ebola.
I wish all Sierra Leoneans a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Let us use the end of the year to reflect on ways to ensure 2015 sees an end to Ebola!
