…Bio tells Gendema residents
February 21, 2018 By Mohamed Massaquoi
Presidential candidate of the main opposition Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP) has assured residents of Gendema that he is running for the position of presidency in order to help develop Sierra Leone and not to infringe on the rights and freedoms of citizens, as it is under the current administration of the All Peoples Congress (APC).
Retired Brigadier Maada Bio charged that the current administration has destroyed education in the country.
He boasted of being the best presidential candidate among the sixteen aspirants as he has got the required qualifications and experience in providing quality leadership for the citizenry.
He said the SLPP believes in developing human capacity, which is why the party has prioritised education in its ‘New Direction Manifesto’, adding that the ruling APC has blatant disrespect for education and that since they came to power close to ten years ago, they have destroyed the education sector.
“Human development is both a means and an end in development. Development is about people. No meaningful development can take place in any nation without developing the human capital. Human development is about improving the lives of people and giving them the freedom to choose the decisions that affect their lives. Human capital development covers improving education and developing skills, improving healthcare, protecting the poor and vulnerable population groups. My government will improve education and skills training.
“Investing in quality education – primary, secondary, and post-secondary including technical and vocational education and training (TVET) and university, will help transform Sierra Leone’s natural and mineral resources into sustainable development. Education is the key to individual, community and national development. Education helps lift people out of poverty and creates vast new opportunities to reduce unfair income distribution and increase choices. It creates awareness and helps to sustain democracy and peace,’’ he said.
Bio further charged that APC has failed the people of Sierra Leone and that it was time for voters to vote against their misrule.
He informed the gathering that he was deployed at Gendema when the war broke out, and that during that period, he worked tirelessly to protect the people in that part of the country.
He added that it was the APC that cause the outbreak of war in 1991, noting that he ensured that lasting peace was restored when he voluntarily gave up power in 1996.
“I am appealing to you to give me another opportunity to fight for you and liberate our nation. The APC government is not good for themselves neither the people of Sierra Leone. It is our collective responsibility to liberate this nation by voting out the APC. APC must go and the time is now,” he said and concluded that his government has a plan to make Sierra Leone peaceful and stable for development process.
