Disgraced former Mayor of the Freetown City Council, Herbert George Williams, was supposed to make his second appearance before Magistrate Santigie Bangura of the Siaka Steven Street Court No.1 on Friday, but his lawyers informed the Bench that he was suffering from a particular medical condition and that he was advised to travel out of the jurisdiction for treatment.
Magistrate Bangura, however, adjourned the matter to June 21st, 2018, and subpoenaed Dr.S.Lakkoh to be in court on the next adjourned date to prove the veracity of a medical report that was tendered by the defense counsel.
One of the defense lawyers, Rolland Nylender produced and tendered a copy of a ‘medical report’ purportedly prepared by Dr.S.Lakkoh, but the document was vehemently challenged by the associate prosecuting counsel, Lawyer Ansu Lansana, on the grounds that the letterhead was a computer generated one bereaved of features of a real letterhead.
‘My Lord, we have perused the document and observed that it has a computer generated letterhead and not a letterhead to the true sense of the word. We have observed that it does not have the features of a real letterhead,’ he argued.
Lawyer Lansana further submitted that, ‘We have also observed that from the document, the accused is suffering from hypochondria pain. Ordinary pain my Lord! We are applying that he ought to come to court for him to be cross-examined,’ he submitted.
Meanwhile, Magistrate Bangura noted that he would take the medical report as ‘irregular’ on its face until proven otherwise by an expert, adding that failure also on the side of the disgraced former mayor to be in court on the next adjourned date would attract a bench warrant.
The former Mayor of the Freetown City Council is before the court for bearing hands in election violence during the March 31st, 2018, Presidential Run-Off elections in Sierra Leone.
He was one of the then ruling All People’s Congress Party ‘pawns’ who beat up on Journalist Patrick Jaiah Kamara of Concord Times Communications, while executing his legitimate function on election day at the Mafa Field in Lumley, Freetown.
The former disgraced mayor made his maiden appearance in court on May 29th ,2018 and he was granted bail in the sum of twenty-five million Leones plus one surety.
He was charged to court for conspiracy, assault and malicious damage.
