Minister of Local Government and Rural Development yesterday disclosed that there are still 62 vacant positions for Paramount Chiefs across the country.
He said very soon his ministry in collaboration with the National Electoral Commission ( NEC) will conduct elections for the vacant positions, adding that when he assumed office he put a hold on all paramount chieftaincy elections for him to better understand the process and how they will ensure transparent and accountable process.
Tamba Lamina made the above statement at the usual Ministry of Information and Communications conference hall in Freetown.
“I am asking our people to give us some times as we want to ensure that the appropriate things are put in place. We don’t want somebody to be elected Paramount Chief without going through the acceptable process,” he said, adding that NEC is now working on the Chiefdom Councillor’s list to ensure that the rightful people are on the list.
He also informed newsmen that his ministry was in the process of reviewing the Local Government Act of 2004 and the Local Government Policy as strategies to give more support to the councils.
He commended the United Nations Development Programme for their support to the review process, adding that President Dr. Julius Mazda Bio will soon launch the review process.
