A total of 170 teams – 14 Premier League clubs, 56 from the First Division and 100 Second Division teams – will compete in this year’s Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA) FA Cup competition which commences on February 9.
According to the SLFA media department, the 2014 FA Cup competition will be organized in two stages of which five-round matches will be played amongst the first and second division teams, while the second stage will involve the 14 Premier League clubs and the 18 qualifiers from the first stage.
Explaining the format of the competition, Hawa Dauda – a member of the SLFA media unit – said the 156 teams who will start the preliminary round will have to play each other home-and-away before the final draw will be made for the final stage of the competition.
She said: “The team that emerges as winner will represent Sierra Leone in the CAF Confederations Cup the following year and the runner-up will also represent the country in the West Africa Football Union (WAFU) second slot club competition.”
She said the champions will walk away with Le20 million with the runners-up taking home Le10 million.
It was also confirmed that popular cement manufacturers, LEOCEM, will sponsor the tournament, with other corporate entities set to throw their support towards the league.
FC Kallon were the last winners of the FA Cup which was last played in 2006 after defeating Central Parade in the grand finale.
